Josephine Mandamin : born 1945 Wiikwemkoong First Nation, Manitoulin Island – died February 22, 2019
Three-fires Medewewin lodge grandmother / nokohmis who followed prophesy, walking more than 25,000 kilometers in the last thirteen years of her life, carrying a copper pail full of water / nibi. For her, water has spirit, brings us songs, and must be honoured, protected and cared for before it’s too late.

Maria Campbell : born April 26, 1940, currently lives in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
One of the first Indigenous women to ever be published for her autobiographical book Half Breed. Charismatic and daring, Maria scribed her life as a Métis woman growing up in the plains and her experiences of racism, poverty, sexual abuse, determination and self-discovery. Still thriving ; ceremonial elder, teacher and artist, Campbell will pour tea and tell stories at her kitchen table with anyone who stops in.
